Khenpo Tsewang Rinpoche leading the Powa teaching session with Dzogchen transmission

4th Powa Practice Retreat – Seven Days in Melbourne

From 20 to 26 June 2024, Khenpo Chagkhung Tsewang Rinpoche led the 4th Australian Powa Practice Retreat in Melbourne, spanning seven days of intensive practice, teaching, and meditation. This retreat marked another milestone in the transmission of this profound liberation practice in Australia.

About the Powa Practice

Powa, or "consciousness transference," is one of the Six Yogas of Naropa and a vital practice within Vajrayana Buddhism. It is a method for guiding the consciousness at the time of death toward liberation or a higher rebirth, enabling practitioners to navigate the dying process with clarity and intention.

In the Nyingma tradition, Powa is regarded as an especially powerful means of benefiting both oneself and others — particularly for those who have not yet achieved full realization. Through authentic transmission and diligent practice, even ordinary practitioners can prepare themselves for the moment of death and benefit deceased loved ones.

Retreat Highlights

  • ◆Seven days of intensive Powa practice with full liturgy transmission
  • ◆Teachings on the Bardo (intermediate state) and the nature of consciousness
  • ◆Daily guided meditation sessions and group practice
  • ◆Dedication of merit for deceased family members and all sentient beings
  • ◆Closing Tsok offering ceremony on the final day

Rinpoche's Guidance

Throughout the retreat, Rinpoche emphasised that Powa is not only a practice for the dying, but a practice for the living — a daily reminder of impermanence that cultivates genuine compassion and renunciation. He guided participants through each stage of the practice with great care and precision.

Rinpoche also shared stories of the great masters who perfected this practice and explained how it connects with the broader path of Dzogchen and Mahamudra. His teachings blended profound philosophical insight with accessible, practical guidance.

The seventh day concluded with a heartfelt dedication of merit, offering the benefits of the retreat to all sentient beings — especially those who have passed away. Participants expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to engage in this rare and precious practice under Rinpoche's direct guidance.
