4th Australian Powa Practice Retreat
From 20 to 26 June 2024, Khenpo Chagkhung Tsewang Rinpoche led the fourth consecutive seven-day Powa practice retreat in Melbourne, Australia. Practitioners from across Australia and overseas gathered to engage in this rare and profound practice of consciousness transference.
About the Powa Practice
Powa, or the practice of consciousness transference, is one of the Six Yogas of Naropa and a key practice in Vajrayana Buddhism. It is a method for transferring one's consciousness to a pure realm at the time of death, ensuring a favorable rebirth and the opportunity to continue one's spiritual journey toward liberation.
The specific practice transmitted in these retreats is the Dzogchen Powa — "Phowa of the Great Perfection" — a profound method that combines the view of Dzogchen with the skilful means of consciousness transference, making it uniquely powerful and direct.
Seven-Day Retreat Structure
- ◆Detailed theoretical teachings on the Powa practice and its Dzogchen view
- ◆Oral transmission and empowerment for the complete Powa liturgy
- ◆Daily guided group practice sessions morning and afternoon
- ◆Individual guidance and correction of practice for each participant
- ◆Evening question and answer sessions on the Dharma and daily practice
Significance of the Annual Retreat
This fourth consecutive annual Powa retreat in Melbourne reflects Rinpoche's deep commitment to establishing authentic Dharma practice in the Southern Hemisphere. By returning each year, Rinpoche allows practitioners to deepen their understanding and refine their practice over time, building a true community of dedicated practitioners.
Participants included both returning practitioners who had attended previous retreats and new students receiving the transmission for the first time. The retreat was conducted in both Tibetan and Chinese, with English translation available, making it accessible to the diverse community of Australian practitioners.
The seven-day retreat concluded with heartfelt dedications of merit for all sentient beings. Rinpoche expressed his joy at seeing the steady growth of dedicated Dharma practitioners in Australia and reaffirmed his aspiration to continue transmitting the precious Nyingma lineage teachings in this land.
